Three-Time Medalist Singles World Champion

ROB'S BLOG

Continuing with the Overseas 'THE WORLD' Tour
and other events/info!

Stage 6 of 'THE WORLD' has just been completed and good friend and long time professional player, Paul Lim takes the win!  Paul played well and had a great finals match against one of the hottest new players to hit the U.S. circuit - Benny Dersch!  Benny beat me in the 32 round.  I told Benny he didn't need any luck, but all the past stages, the person who beat me in the 32 round always made the finals!  Well superstition held true and Benny made it there, playing great all the way!  Congrats to all the Top 4 players as well.

I also received awesome news, that Steve Ngu the CEO of DARTSLIVE ASIA, had approved with the Executive Board of DARTSLIVE ASIA, for me to become a promoter for them!  That was incredible and so happy to be asked to be a part of the next generation of Darts Lifestyle and innovation!

Then the previous weekend, good friend and amigo, Scotty B and I played together in the NDA Western Region Finals in Sacramento.  We did the trifecta and won both doubles events and the team, plus Scotty threw in another win the previous day in the Singles!

The week prior to that, my other best friend, Chris White and I played at the San Francisco Open and won the 501 Doubles.

Then just after San Francisco Open, I had the pleasure to represent COSMO Darts in Japan at the Darts HiVe Barrels tournament in Yokohama!  This event was open to only Japanese barrel manufacturers and what an event it was!  There were 25 teams represented at the event and some great talent showed up as well.  We lost in the knockout round, both COSMO A and B teams in the round of 16.

I also got to meet Mr. Sato from Darts HiVe, who allowed me to donate funds from the IDART group, to help continue with the relief efforts in Japan!  Mr. Sato was gracious enough to allow me to make a speech on behalf of everyone who supported IDART and I got to meet Miho & Tsuyoshi Kadogawa!  Miho was on stage with me and helped to present our donation to Mr. Sato, it took everything I had to not cry, as it was a truly emotional moment.

Miho and I presenting Mr. Sato with the IDART donation!

I was lucky and received a gift from Mr. Sato.  100 sets of DARTSLIVE darts, what a suprise!!!

Then just after the event ended saturday, we flew down to Matsuyama Japan for the D-Crown Professional Tour in Ehime!  This was great, as we had to qualify for the Pro Tour card as well.  Gary Mawson and I went down to this event for COSMO Darts and took the skills test and passed!  We played the next day at the tournament and I finished in the Top 16 and Semi Finals in the Open Draw Doubles, where I drew a great player for DMC Darts Japan - Tomonari Kurokawa.

My doubles partner Tomonari!

Finalist and Semi Finals winners of the D-Crown Doubles!

I was privileged and asked to commentate on the singles finals with some of the other guests at D-Crown for the DVD.

Myself, Mr. Matsubara, Gary Mawson and Hiroaki Matsubara

THANK YOU COSMO Darts and COSMO Darts family for making the trip to Japan incredible!

No rest for this old man lol!  After "The World", I may be attending a special event in Yokohama Japan for COSMO Darts!  September 23-24, will be a Manufacturers Challenge Cup!  Only Japanese dart barrel companies can participate and have two teams of 5 enter!  This will be a great challenge to see who can say they have the Champion Barrel Company in Japan!  Then on Sunday the 25th, there will be another tournament in Matsuyama, Ehime Japan for the D-Crown Tour.  Then Monday the 26th, an exhibition night with other COSMO Darts Japan players at 7pm (more details to come).

If you havene't heard, DARTSLIVE ASIA has the biggest soft darts tour called "The World!"  Can you be crowned the next King?!

Dartslive Asia, headed be CEO Steve Ngu in Hong Kong, has put together a professional soft darts tour that nearly rivals the PDC in regards to payout!  Each of the stages pays out $100,000HKD (roughly $12,000usd) to the winner!  All of this to qualify in the top 100 with points to attend "The World" final in Decemeber, where a whopping $1,000,000HKD is up for grabs to the winner!  There hasn't been a professional soft tour such as this ever before!  The event is open, so come if you have what it takes to be called the "King of THE WORLD!"  This is absolutely the best tour I've been privileged to play in,
so check it out and find what it's all about!  See you all in Hong Kong every month for the rest of the year - CHEERS!

So Many Things - Not enough Time!
Things have been more than hectic around my household lately!  Darts is increasing and starting to surge again not only in the USA, but around the world.  I've been doing a lot of promoting for COSMO Darts and now that we've signed over 15 players this year, it's my turn to start the practice back up and hit the circuit again.  Being the Promotions Rep. for North America has definitely taken up much of my playing time, but I'm definitely looking forward to getting back and seeing everyone again!

TEAM USA WINS at the 26th Annual Bullshooter World Finals!
It was a great pleasure to play with Bob Hudzik, Eric Blackledge and Scott Miller on Team USA this year in Chicago at the Bullshooter World Finals!  We played a great Canadian team comprised of Chris White, Dan Olson, Jay Barlow and Scott Warnock in the finals.  We edged Team Canada out with a 3-1 victory, bringing back the international challenge cup back to the good ole USA!  It was a great international event, where everyone wore their country pride on their sleeves.  All the teams who participated were talented and performed greatly for their countries!  Thank you to all the teams who partcipated this year -
Japan, Norway, Spain, Canada, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany!

April 9, 2011 - Asia Darts Assoc. 7th Annual Tournament Taipei - Taiwan
It was time again to join the fun at Asia Darts Association's 7th annual tournament.  This year it was held in Taipei Taiwan and since I've never been there for an actual stay, I was definitely looking forward to this.  Travelling on this trip with me was Team USA members Bob Hudzig, Rick Espinoza, Scotty Burnett, Carolyn Nessmann, Bob Wiles our manager and my buddy Chris White.

This was Bob and Carolyn's first trip to Asia and I don't think they were disappointed.  All the things they've ever heard about with the competition level, the friendships and memories they got to experience.  I'd definitely say they are hooked on going back to another tournament anywhere in Asia!

In the International Team event, we made it past a 3-way tie in the round robin bracket with Malaysia and Singapore.  We made it out of the bracket but lost to a crazy 3rd leg 501 game against my last years team, Team Thailand in the Quarter Finals.

My best finish of the weekend in singles was the 501 event, where I finished in the Top 16.  Unfortunately, 1-0 up against my friend Christophe from France I ended up losing the match 2-1.  The second leg I missed a 161 to go 2-0, I hit the two triples but that darn "1 Hole" out in soft darts killed me when I missed the bull.  The second third leg came about the same way, with a 119 checkout to win the match, last dart bull again was my nemisis (arghhh!).

That silly "BIG" bullseye would be the death of me that weekend!  In the Triples event playing with Chris and Scotty, I was determined not to miss a Bull out again.  Sure enough I didn't disappoint myself, but unfortunately I looked at the WRONG SCORE!  We were sitting on 101 and our opponents were on 103 and yep you guessed it, I shot the 103 nailing the double bull on the last dart!  I turned around thinking to be congratulated but Chris and Scotty had the "Did he just do that look?!" on their faces (LOL funny now).  We missed another chance at the 101 as they missed the 103 and that's all she wrote.  So see determination does pay off, I told myself I wouldn't miss another single Bull to win and I didn't win but I hit that Bull LOL!

Of course, a trip to Asia wouldn't be the same if I didn't have the privilege to meet some new friends.  The first would be a pair of young aspiring players ages 11 & 13.  Trust me both of these players were averaging high 30ppd's in 501 against me and will sure to see them winning tournaments as they get older.  Ps. don't let the sizes fool you, my 13 year old friend is the shortest!

I was also happy to meet our distributor in Taiwan Marco, who owns M-Darts.  He was gracious enough to pick us up at the airport, show us his shop and take us out for a few refreshments as well.  At the tournament was a coupl other FIT Flight players,Eguchi and TB Tak, so you know we had to take a FIT Flight Team photo with Marco!

At the conclusion of every Asia Darts Assoc. tournament, they always put on an incredible buffet banquet with all the food, beer and wine you can handle (which is included in your entry fee of $188 for the entire weekend!).  The banquet was great as usual, but this one was going to be more special than any other I've ever attended before.  I won't get into the details and try to re-write what good friend Rick Espinoza had already written.  Rick wrote an incredible story of the auction we did with one of the dartboards Team USA's table had won.  To read more about the charity auction we did, click on the link here:  RICKESPINOZA.COM

Here are a couple pictures of the fund rasier, I believe after all said and done we raised close to $5,000USD for the relief efforts in Japan and handed it to my friend Yuji Eguchi's son.  A big thanks to everyone at the banquet for their donations, as we truly came together as a darts community to show our friends from Japan our support.  A special thanks to Ms. Rebecca Wang who placed the winning bid of $30,000NT which started the flow of donations continuing to come in.

Thank You ADA and everyone in Taiwan for making this a great tournament!

February 21, 2011 - Queen Mary Classic...
This was my first trip to the Queen Mary tournament down in Long Beach.  It was definitely an interesting venue to host a dart tournament, right along side the Scottish Festival!  FIT Flight player Chris White won the singles 501 and the MVP for the weekend.  A few costly missed doubles in 501 and a nice single bull in Cricket ended my day at the singles events.  Not my best outing to say the least, but was able to salvage the weekend in the doubles event.  Myself and FIT Flight test player Ron Colvard won the Doubles event, having to beat our teammates Chris White and Andrew Bennett in the Semi's to get to the finals.  Nice weekend, a lot of players and tons of good competition!

February 20, 2011 - John Part wins PDC Derby Players Championship!
Congragtulations to John Part for a brilliant win in Derby last weekend!  John was truly on form and was obviously rejuvinated by his new COSMO Dart sponsorship, white washing Mark Walsh 6-0 in the finals.  On the way John missed a double 12 for a perfect 9 dart game in his opening match on Saturday!  Here's a little breakdown of the road to the finals for John and his victory:

John Part (6-4) Darren Johnson
John Part (6-1) Mark Dudbridge
John Part (6-5) Dennis Ovens
John Part (6-0) Richie Burnett
John Part (6-2) Jamie Caven
John Part (6-2) Wes Newton
John Part (6-0) Mark Walsh

February 16, 2011 - Camellia Classic Update...
Another Camellia Classic has passed by again and another job well done by the SVDA staff!  My long time doubles partner at this event Chris White and I retained our Cricket Doubles title, fending off Nico Depaynos and Ed Dailey.

Another good friend of ours and COSMO Darts FIT Flight test player Andrew Bennett, won the singles Cricket Title.  Chris White also made it to the finals of the 501 event but lost a tight 3rd leg to Lor Thao.  On the way Chris beat me in a great 3 leg match in the Quarter finals.

So all in all another great weekend of darts for COSMO Darts and FIT Flight players!

NEW WEB SITE LOOK & DART SPONSOR!

Hi everyone!  Yes I know it has been almost a year since my last write up.  Let's just say I've been busy with darts as you've probably already noticed.  I have switched to a new sponsor COSMO Darts out of Japan and have been accepted by the Matsubara Family to join COSMO!  I've also had a change in family status, adding another son to the family and things have been a bit crazy but for the good.  I've also had added responsibilities to my resume.  Now I'm a professional darts player and official USA representative for players and promotions for COSMO Darts!  Mr. Matsubara has entrusted me with helping COSMO Darts succeed in North America.  My first task was signing quite a few North Americans - Chris White (FIT Flight sponsorship), Scott Kirchner (FIT Flight sponsorship), John Kramer (full COSMO Dart sponsorship), Dan Olson (full COSMO Dart sponsorship), Gary Mawson (full COSMO Dart sponsorship) and the biggest shock to the darting world, bringing on John Part to COSMO Darts as our exclusive player!

I've got tons more to catch up and write on and will try and keep everyone posted.  Ps.  My good friend and long time doubles partner Chris White and I won another Camellia Classic doubles Cricket championship this year!

Asia Bullshooter 6 - Osanbashi Hall, Yokohama Japan
Updated April 5, 2010

I first have to thank Asia Darts Association for hosting another great Asia Bullshooter event!  A big thank you must go out to Joseph Kwon, Chris Ngan, Bob Wiles, Junkei Lin and all the staff of Asia Darts Association for making this event happen!  This was also the first tournament I was playing at while wearing my new dart shirts made by Koichiro Ueda's shirt company  SHADE Co.  PUMA Darts had myself and Mayumi Ouchi (Japan) representing them in this event, thanks to our sponsor Peter McCormick for all your support!

Since this was my first ever trip to Japan, I decided to head in a little early with fellow U.S.A. players Ray Carver, Rick Espinoza, Wendy Espinoza, Kevin Jinkensen and Scott Ferrian for a little Tokyo visit for the first two days.  Koichiro Ueda was kind enough to invite all of us out for dinner and introduced us to one awesome person, his friend Hiroyuki Kani aka "Hiro"!  The first night in Tokyo did not disappoint anyone, as we started out with some awesome seafood, then off to D-Stand Bar which is owned by Koichiro's friend Yusuke Matsuura.  Mr. Matsuura was an incredible host at his darts bar.  I also met new friends Taiga Takata and Naoko Komine aka "Nao".   Here we were introduced to a drink called "Ryokucya hai koime!", a mixture of green tea and korean soju white liquor.  By the way - "koime" means double!  Taiga was bartending that night and ensured none of us went thirsty, thanks Taiga!

One of the best stories of the weekend started at D-Stand Bar.  It was Wendy's birthday and we were celebrating in class.  Wendy didn't have a partner for the weekend, well she didn't need to look any further.  This is where "Nao" comes in.  "Nao" asked me for a challenge game, no smiles all sincerity and I agreed.  Best of 3 was the match, I won the first 501 against the darts.  Then in cricket, yes get this on record, "Nao" schooled me with a nice 5.7MPR dart average!  Oh the boys, primarily Ray, were giving it to me as were the rest of my companions.  Yes I won the 3rd leg, thank goodness or I don't think I'd hear the end of it from my "buddies" LOL!  So, Wendy and "Nao" set up for the doubles event and good thing as they won it  in Yokohama!  So that was a nice birthday present and trip to Japan for Wendy, who also won the ladies Singles!  "Nao" won the ladies Asia MVP for the weekend and she wasn't even planning on going to the event!

Thank you Koichiro, Hiro, Yusuke, Taiga and everyone at D-Stand for making it an awesome night!

The second day Koichiro had a nice bit of promotion for Ray and Amin, his TIGA players, but was very kind and invited all of us out again!  We first went to a couple of Dart Stores and were introduced to MOA and Bat Darts dart stores.  Even though I was a PUMA player, Koichiro still introduced me as a SHADE Co. and PUMA sponsored player to everyone - WOW how great of a person is that!

After the dart store visits, we were off to the largest dart bar in the area called "Shibuya".  The bar was called "Bee" bar and was an absolutely phenominal darts bar!  It was huge and had plenty of boards to go around.  We sat in the VIP section, had plenty of beverages and food, then watched as Ray and Amin played against challengers.  I also had a great suprise as my good friend Tamiko Okawa came with several of the DartsLive Media group people Hiroyuki Fujihara, Kaori Noto to name a few.  Thanks for travelling all that way to visit the promotion!  I could tell you some more stories from the "Bee", but those will have to wait...

The next day was Friday and off we went to Yokohama to check in and get ready to play the first event.  We got to the hotel at 12:00pm and we thought we would have 3 hours before we played to get ready and clean up.  OHHH no they said our room wouldn't be ready until 2:00opm at the earliest.  We all looked at each other with a bit of a shock to say the least!  But the Hotel JAL was very accomodating and readied all of our rooms for us within the hour, now that's service!

Just a little background on the tournament for everyone.  This was the first time that Asia Bullshooter was held in Japan.  The inaugural event took place at the Osanbashi Pier, which is the oldest pier in Yokohama originally constructed between 1889 and 1896.  It was a beautiful oceanfront setting for darts, camaraderie and good times!
Asia Bullshooter 6 hosted International Teams and players from Japan, USA, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Portugal, France, China, Thailand and Macao.  There were over 50 boards, professional photographers and media crews showed up as well.  I must also thank Mr. Hideyuki Nakano for all of these awesome pictures and Ken Tsang who took pictures for Asia Darts Association!

Here's the second and best story of the weekend.  Buddy, Bob Wiles, who hasn't played in a tournament that I've been to since I have known him the last 15 years - WINS the Pro Singles 501!  Bob didn't even want to play in the event since he was helping to run the tournament.  With a little egging on, Bob decided to play and BOOM BABY a new Champion was crowned.  Congratulations Bob for a job well done, way to represent USA!

The tournament was a success and the play matched the grandeur of the events host site.  The Philippine Team won the International Event, with Team USA meeting them in the finals.  I teamed up with Kevin Jinkensen from USA in the Team Hammer Cricket event and made it to the Quarter Finals.  In the Doubles 501, partner and good buddy Ray Carver and I ran into a determined duo of Japanese players who took us out in the 16's.  For the Pro Singles 501, I made it to the Semi-Final losing the last leg against the darts to Philippine player, Mr. Briones.  The weekend wasn't over and I was determined to make it out of Japan with at least one 1st place trophy!  In the final event I teamed up with Ray Carver (USA) and Amin Ghani (Malaysia), and we won against a formidable Team Spain!

So all in all, a great weekend of darts and memories to last a lifetime!  Thank you to everyone I met from all over the world, you made this a unbelievable event!

Winning Triples Team for SHADE Co. - a collaboration of PUMA and TIGA Darts Players!

Before I go, I would like to say I am also excited to have met Mr. Hiroaki Matsubara "Fit Flight"!  I looked at their shaft and flight product, which I must say is beyond exceptional!  The flight is computer engineered and molded into one solid piece.  The design is not only superb, but the feel and play of the entire shaft/flight system is definitely the best I've tested and played with.  The flights are extremely tough and will be able to be used for many tournaments over and over.  I normally wouldn't place a new shaft and flight system on my dart at a big tournament like Asia Bullshooter, but the system felt so right I had to try it.  The last picture says it all -  Game winning shot using my new Puma SHOT! Darts and "Fit Flight" system, what a great combination!  Thank you Mr. Matsubara for trusting me to test your product!

Rae Chesney Open / Las Vegas Open / Camellia Classic

Updated February 17, 2010

Well the first part of this year started out pretty well for the most part.  My totally redesigned darts are feeling better and better at every event!  January kicked off with the always talent filled Philadelphia hosted Rae Chesney Open.  I played with my good buddy Chris white in the doubles and Brenda Rousche in the triples event.  Chris and I made it to the Finals of the Doubles Cricket event, coming up just a bit short to Darin Young and Joe Slyvan.  Chris and I also made the Semi-Final of the Doubles 501, Semi-Final of the Mixed Triples and I made it to the 8's of the 501 Singles as well.  This was a decent start to the year I thought, up next was the Las Vegas Open.

In Vegas, I was glad to have paired up with my friend Royden Lam from Hong Kong.  I met Royden a year ago in Hong Kong, when Chris and I went over to play in the Asia Bullshooter.  Royden is now playing for DartsLive in Hong Kong and has been practicing a lot.  Royden made it to the finals of the 501 Singles, just losing to Bill Davis.  Royden and I also made it to the Semi-Final of the Doubles Cricket, losing to John Part and Darin Young.  My Mixed Doubles partner Jan Turner and I made it to the 8's as well in the Cricket event.  For the singles, that didn't fair to well for me.  I met Bruce Davey from Southern Ontario Canada, let's just say he put a good wooping on me that I hadn't had in a long time LOL!  Well done mate!

This past weekend in Sacramento, Chris White and I paired up again as usual for this event.  We were looking to make up to last years loss in the Finals of the Doubles 501 and our early departure in the Doubles Cricket.  The previous 7 years, we had won the majority of the Doubles events and were looking to do the same this year again.  No disappointment for either of us as we won both the Men's Doubles Cricket and 501 events.  I also got paired up with another buddy, Dave Fatum in the Draw 301 event and we won that as well.  So three events won not bad again.  The singles, arghhhhh!  Too many missed doubles in the 501 for my liking, almost made me sick!  But that's the way the weekend ended and just couldn't find the darn double to save my life, scoring was easy lol!  \

In the Cricket singles I lost in the Quarter Finals to my first mentor in Steel Darts, Steve Arionus from Washington State.  I was up in the final leg by 70 points and had 19's and 15's at my disposal and Steve had 16's.  I made a critical mistake mentally, one that I should never have done against my old mentor and friend.  When you don't take advantage of an opportunity to seal the game, it will certainly come back to bite you.  Steve continued to pound the 16's and eventually my lapse in judgement and forgetting Steve's ability cost me and he won the match.  Well done Steve, thanks for reminding me why you were my mentor and still a solid player!

Medalist Asia International
December 6th - Bangkok, Thailand

It had been almost 25 years since I had gone back to my country of birth and seen my family members still living in Thailand.  This was not only a trip for darts, but an exciting time for me to meet up with my cousins, aunts and friends as well.  My great friend "Pop" who organizes the Thai Airways Team, runs the Thaisoftdarts.com website and is the PUMA Darts distributor for Thailand, invite some of his friends from Khorat Thailand to attend the event.  I was super excited to meet these players because, Khorat was where I grew up for the first 5 years of my life!

I landed in Bangkok on Thursday and was picked up by my buddy Pop.  It was a great feeling to FINALLY be back in Thailand!  Even though it wasn't the "Hot" season, it was still pretty warm about 90 degrees
and humid.  It was about a 45 minute drive to get to the Royal River Hotel from the airport.  As we neared the hotel, I rolled down the window and took in the wonderful smells of Thai food, which was being cooked from the little food carts and restaurants surrounding the area.

I met up with my buddy Elliott Garma, who would be rooming with me for the weekend and got settled in.  Our room overlooked the river with a nice view of the city as well.  No time for admiring the room, we went down to the venue hall and checked out the setup.  Lots of players from Singapore, Japan, Korea, Thailand, France and Taipei had already shown up and were bustling around the hall also.

In the midst of getting the room finished for the opening ceremonies, there was Lee Peppard (Owner of Medalist) and another good buddy Paul Lim.  Paul, Elliott and I would also make up Team USA for the International Pride Cup team challenge.  After a quick look at the room, off we went to satisfy our hunger for some great Thai food and Singha beer.  It was very hot out you know, so no better way to relax than visiting a great local cafe!

The tournament hall was filled with players from all over the world.  It was great to see so many new faces and old friends joining the tournament!  I was teamed up with different players on the bring doubles tournament days, twice I played with fellow Thai players and a very nice player from Singapore.  To win a doubles event would be nice, but that was not the Ultimate prize for me.  After a long 20 hour flight to Bangkok, I was here for one reason and that was to hoist the Asia Singles Cup Title and to top it off, hopefully win the Asia Pride Cup Country Team Challenge.

Team USA fell a bit short in the challenge cup, as we lost to Japan in the Semi Finals.  It was well played by all of us that day, but Japan was just too strong during our match.  As it was Japan played Team Thailand in the Finals and won in the deciding 7th leg.  Congrats to all the international teams!  As for the singles, that didn't go as I had planned.  I made it to the finals and played against a good friend from Thailand, Natthakhom.  I felt the fatigue and exhaustion from all my travels and the trip to Thailand as the 1:00am finals start kicked off.  I tried to pull every last ounce of mental will power I had, but in the end it was Natthakhom winning the title.  Congratulations to Natthakhom for a job well done.  Guess I will have to give it another shot in Taipei in 2010!

November 17, 2009
Shanghai International Dart Open!

There is so much to talk about I have no idea where to start or how to even begin.  Each day was great and so many memories and friendships were made.  I want to make sure I do Shanghai and the SIDO justice in my recount of the trip, so this blog might be a little longer than most!  But before I begin, I must first thank all the Organizers, Hosts, Sponsors and everyone who made this event happen – China Leisure Sports Administrative Center, China Darts Association, Shanghai Sports Federation, Xu Hui District People’s Government, Shanghai Leisure Sports Administration Center, Xuhui District Sports Bureau, XuHui District Commercial Commission, Xuhui District Tourism Bureau, Xuhui District Cultural Bureau, Xuhui District Darts Association, Sports Hotel 21, my friends Mr. Sue Jie, Mr. Hoo, Tyler Shu, Bookie Zhu, Phil Hanna and many others who were involved in making this event happen.  I must give a special thanks to my sponsor, PUMA Darts, and especially to my family for always supporting me.  I mustn’t leave out my buddy “Tank” who took all the pictures everyone got to enjoy…Thank you all!

First, a little background of how SIDO came about:  Last year, another good friend and PUMA player Warren Parry and I were invited to attend the event as guests.  We did some promotions and played the winners of the event at the end for a little exhibition you could say.  At the time, persons living outside of mainland China were not allowed to participate, so we were there to more or less critique the venue and see if it were feasible to make it into an international event.  To say the least Warren and I had one hell of a good time and the foundation was set for this year’s event.

I didn’t think there was anyway to top the great times Warren and I had last year…HA was I wrong!  This year, not only did Warren come back, but my buddies Chris White, John Part, Gary Mawson, Dave Fatum, Paul “Dartoid” Seigel and Koichiro Ueda to name a few, made the trip as well.  I also cannot forget the host of other top players from around the world that came as well to enjoy Shanghai.  We had players from Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Ireland, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Russia, New Zealand, Canada, and of course, the United States of America.

Ok, enough of the background let’s get down to the good stuff, so where do I begin?  Hmmm, well I guess I will just have to start with Day 1, which was five days before the actual tournament started.  A little bit of promotions, exhibitions, substituting on Shanghai Dart League night and of course let us not forget the all important “Shanghai Shenanigans”!  Yes darts is not only about playing the game for me, but the good times had in making new friends and meeting up with old friends are just as important.  I always like to sum it up as, “It’s all about the memories.  You’ll never get these times back!”  With that said – here goes the story!

Saturday, October 10th - DAY 1 San Francisco, California to Shanghai, China

My good mate and fellow PUMA player, Chris White and I got into Shanghai at 9pm after a nice short 16 hour trip from San Francisco.  We were greeted at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport by my friends and fellow tournament organizers Tyler, Bookie, Phil and John Fey.  It was instant smiles from everyone as we were glad to be back in Shanghai again!  The funniest part of it all was them asking if Chris and I were tired and just wanted to go to the hotel and sleep….LOL!  What do you think we said?  You guessed it, no way were we going to bed this early.  We had to get our internal clock adjusted to the time difference you know!  Shanghai is a full 15 hours ahead of San Francisco time and it felt like the morning to us.

It was a 1-hour car ride to the Sports Hotel 21 in the Xu Hui District of Shanghai.  This was where the venue was held as well, so that made it very convenient.  As we entered the Xu Hui District, you started to notice green banners on EVERY light post.  Bookie let us know the banners were all throughout the district and promoted the upcoming SIDO.  When you looked at the front of the hotel, it was amazing to see the tournament being promoted on the huge span of glass, which made up the entire front half of the hotel.  The glass had huge see through posters which advertised the tournament in English and Chinese.

We checked into our room which was very nice, thanks Bookie!  We cleaned up really fast and back down we came to meet everyone in the lobby.  Tyler had a little nightlife spot he wanted to take us to, so off we went to the “Muse”.  Let’s just say the “Muse” was just as amazing as any top notch club would be in Las Vegas, you can use your imagination to paint your own picture.  After a couple hours at the “Muse” we decided to hit my old favorite, the “Green Dragon” bar.

The “Green Dragon” is a wonderful bar, set up like an old Irish Pub with dark wood beams and fixtures.  The place is actually pretty big and is where Bookie and Phil play league darts.  They have six steel dart boards, two billiard tables, a foosball table and plenty of beverages to go around.  The house specialty is playing the local talent a game of pool.  If you win, you get any drink you want for free.  But if you lose, the same goes for you and you have to buy the lovely lady you played a drink.  Before all you billiard hustlers think you’re drinking for free all night, the employees are some pretty good, no very good players.  Morning came, LOL yes morning is right!  I can’t remember what time exactly, but let’s say people were going to work.  Now we were ready for a nice five hour nap before day two was to start….

Sunday, October 11th – Day 2

Our buddy Dave Fatum was coming in today and would be meeting us later in the evening.  It was around 3pm on Sunday and our phone rang, waking us up from our nap.  We got dressed and off we went to our first bit of promotion.  We were going to a local billiards club to play against some new darters.  The billiards club had two soft dart electronic boards inside.  The owner greeted us with a warm smile and into his place Chris and I went.

The players that were there, had just begun to play darts and the interest level was spreading throughout Shanghai.  More and more people have taken up the sport and the enthusiasm for it is incredible.  At first Chris and I helped everyone out by giving them the basics of playing darts.  The form, hold and throw.  We watched anyone who wanted to get some pointers, and then we played singles against those who were willing, which meant everyone in there!

They decided to have a “mini” doubles tournament while we were there.  Chris and I were paired up with a couple newer lady players and everyone else chose there own.  It came down to Chris and his partner against me and mine in the finals.  There was great suspense, as the finals would be decided on the last leg of 501.  Our partners were having a great time and people were enjoying watching some good darts being thrown.  Chris and his partner won the last leg and that concluded our first promotion tour.

The owner thanked us for coming out to help the newer players and presented us with a wonderful gift.  Our gifts were hand painted art banners with Chinese caligraphy which he did himself!  The banners were phrases of inspiration to help promote self confidence.  A great piece to go above my board in the practice room!

Now it was time for some dinner!  You really have to be in Shanghai to appreciate the culinary experience they have to offer.  We were going to a special area, which was about an hour drive from where we were called Yang Chen Lake.  Crab was the main item on the menu and the crab we were going for only had a two month season.  Lucky us, we were there at the right time!  We were hosted by the owner of the restaurant and treated to a culinary delight.  Chris even got into the spirit and was trying everything, even taking part in tasting a little fish eye!  It was definitely shaping up for a great and lasting memory once again of good times with the buddies.  I can’t remember how many bottles of yellow wine we went through or beer for that fact, but the entire party we were with was having a great time!

After dinner, I was curious if there were any places in Shanghai that could embroider a dragon on some of my playing shirts.  Oh yes, I can’t forget to mention the shirts came from a good friend Koichiro Ueda, owner of TIGA Darts and Shade Clothing in Japan.   Thank you Koichiro!  It just happened that the owner of the restaurant also had an embroidery business.  He heard from Bookie that I was looking for a place to have a dragon embroidered on my shirts and offered to have my shirts done for me, wow!  I received them a few days later and I can’t tell you how beautiful the embroidery was.  Gold imperial dragons put on two of my shirts and they were hand embroidered!  What a true great piece of artwork to say the least.

Now it was time to drive back to Xu Hui District and meet up with Dave.  Hmmm, it seemed we had found ourselves at “Green Dragon” bar again!  You will start to see a common theme here with this place.  If you ever go to Shanghai and want to have a cold pint and some great fun playing darts or billiards, this is a definite place to visit.  So we concluded the evening at the “Green Dragon”, or should I say the morning again.  I think the bar will soon become the most famous in Shanghai, if not at least the most visited by darters coming in for the SIDO.

Monday, October 12th – Day 3

Even more players were coming in today to include fellow writer and player, Paul Seigel “Dartoid”.  You’ll have to read his article about the tournament as well.  He’s a bit more seasoned as a writer than I and sure he will thoroughly describe his adventures in Shanghai with us a little better.

Our host Bookie continued to spoil us with the best local eating establishments around.  Food was not an issue during our stay in Shanghai!  You’ll just have to see some of the pictures I have, because it would be too hard and would not do the food justice if I were to try and describe everything.

Now we were scheduled for an evening at a brand new snooker and billiards hall that had just opened.  Dave Fatum and Paul Seigel accompanied us to this exhibition; little did they know they were going to be thrust into the promotion portion of it as well.  We walked upstairs to find a gorgeous billiard hall, adorned with dark wood, beautiful tables and about fifteen tables in all.  So you can imagine the size of the place needed for all those tables.

Then at the other end of the hall, we saw a host….no a CROWD of people waiting for us to arrive.  There were three PUMA boards set up with surrounds and mats, a really nice set up to be honest.  The four of us looked at each other as we got closer to the crowd and noticed there wasn’t a bar!  If you haven’t done any exhibitions before, coming in totally cold after a huge dinner, with no warm up and a large crowd, tends to give you a little nervous feeling.  So we marched on and gave each other the big open eyed look, signifying we were all on board with “Oh Boy, here we go!” LOL!

The crowd was filled mostly with people who have not played or have little experience with darts and we were there as the ambassadors to promote the sport.  I can’t forget to mention the host of China sports magazine and newspaper reporters that were there as well.  Here the four of us were sitting in front next to the boards, with the crowd around us and out came the microphones.  It was actually quite nice; everyone got a chance to ask us questions about darts, ourselves and what the fascination with darts was.  This lasted for a good hour and we were all getting into it, with plenty of laughs and stories from all of us to the crowds about the “true in and outs” of darts.

After the question and answer portion we got to throw a few games against each other, meaning Dave, Chris and I.  Mr. Seigel somehow weaseled out of playing against us LOL!  We then helped give pointers to anyone who was interested and everyone from the crowd jumped up for their turn at the board.  It was definitely an awesome time with everyone.  The enthusiasm from everyone was incredible.  I have to say that darts in Shanghai or in China for that fact is going to explode.  I can foresee a future World Champion coming out of China someday.   Since my visit to Shanghai last year, they built a “Dart Training” center in the local middle school to instruct future players, with a full host of coaches and all!  There is another training center for the High School going to be built this year as well.  Now that is dedication to the sport!

The dart promo was concluding and I gave the owner of the snooker hall his chance to even the score on the tables.  We enjoyed a ton of games on the billiards table and good times continued to increase.  New friends + great times = Awesome memories!  This was truly one of the classiest and upscale snooker halls I have ever been to and look forward to returning next year.  Yes you guessed it, after the snooker hall…back to the “Green Dragon”!

Tuesday, October 13th – Day 4

Today was an extra exciting day for Chris and me.  Today we were to meet the Xu Hui Middle School Dart students.  This was a special honor to meet all 12 of the students, their teachers and Coaches.  These students exemplified the meaning of passion for the sport.  Not only do they have their regular schedule of classes, but in addition they have darts practice sessions included in their curriculum!  Now you can understand why many people think that China will someday produce a World Champion in the PDC!  This was an exciting moment for us, but none of us was prepared for the type of interview or reception that we would have.

Chris, Erryn Donaldson (PUMA Rep) and I walked into the closed practice hall and were greeted by a host of students and media.  They had all the students sitting in their uniforms at the very front of the stage, where they had chairs set up for us.  Talk about being in the spotlight, wow!  We were positioned in the seats of honor and greeted by the Xu Hui School District Principal and teachers.

The stage lights were turned on and the media cameras started to roll.  Talk about speechless.  Who would have thought we would be treated like celebrities.  This is where the teachers expressed their gratitude for Chris and me writing letters of inspiration and encouragement to the students.  The letters are posted and framed in the Darts Training center.  They had the letters Chris and I wrote for everyone who would attend the tournament to see placed inside the SIDO program brochures.  That was absolutely unbelievable!  It is truly hard to put into words how grateful I was to be there, let alone how greatly everyone treated us!

The students and teachers presented Chris and me with a token of their appreciation.  They gave us a commemorative coin set of the Xu Hui Schools and a magnificent historical book.  After the gift presentation, we took the kids to the practice boards and watched each student throw.  We gave a critique of each individual student.  Three of the students were actually entered into the tournament, because they shot that well!  It is evident that the students take pride in learning not only school lessons, but the sport of darts.  The kids all took pictures with Chris and me and we signed their programs, shirts and dart cases.  Chris and I handed out a few small gifts to all the students and teachers as well.

Talk about being tired now!  The promotions and nightlife was starting to catch up to me, not as young as I used to be…LOL!  Plus I knew our other good buddies were coming in soon and I needed to rest up, as I would obviously be called to duty.  Gary Mawson was coming in today, with friends Marlese and her father Bernie.  Then John Part was coming in Wednesday morning, along with Koichiro Ueda.  Like I said earlier, it’s always a grand time with just Chris and me hanging out, but now we had the full entourage!  And of course, the common theme again for the evening the “Green Dragon”!  We couldn’t leave Gary, Marlese or Bernie missing out on a game of pool or two!

Wednesday, October 14th – Day 5

Day five, oh yes the famous Shanghai dumpling day.  Bookie took all of us, including a bunch of friends from Hong Kong and Thailand, for baskets upon baskets of fresh made steamed dumplings!  At our table was Gary, Chris, Dave, Warren and myself.  Let’s just say I lost count after 10 baskets of dumplings, with each containing about twelve dumplings a piece.  Do the math; it was a bunch to say the least!  After the meal I was absolutely stuffed and the pace of going out every night and promotions was finally catching up to me!  Man, I don’t think I’m that old yet, but I’m sure not as young as I used to be and my body needed to rest a bit.

I went to take a nap back at the hotel around 2pm after lunch, while Chris, Dave, Gary, Paul and the rest of the gang went shopping.  Bookie was happy to see that I was going to take a break from all the PR work and give my body a rest.  I thought it was best for me since we had a very important day on Wednesday, meeting the officials from Beijing, the Olympic committee, Media, the opening ceremonies and bracket draws.  Busy busy busy!

Oh but wait, I get a knock on the door and here comes in Mr. John Part and the gang waking me up!  Chris comes rushing in and says, “Come on Robbie!  It’s 5 minutes to 7pm and we need to be down stairs for the official draw!!!! “I woke up with my heart pounding, not knowing we had to be downstairs, but they wanted the top 8 seeded players in attendance.  So with 5 minutes to shower, dress and hide the pillow sleep marks on my cheek, off we all went to the tournament hall.

Yes it gets better just wait!  We get downstairs and the place is packed with players and officials.  On stage they have the round robin brackets with all the seeded players’ names on it.  Then they have John, Gary, Dave, Chris, Paul and I sit right up front!  Oh my, the laughs were going now.  It gets better; I get called up by the Head Official to draw some names out!!!  I was totally not ready for this at all.  And my so called buddies down in the front row were no help at all.  They quietly reminded to show my good side, the one without the pillow sleep marks LOL!  What would I do without my good buddies to help me along!

After the official draw was done, do you think we could get some more rest?  I know I was rested, sleeping for a solid 5 hours and John and Gary weren’t tired yet so off we went.  Chris and Warren decided to stay in for the night, the festivities were catching up to them as well and it was their turn to recharge the batteries.

So off we went, John, Gary, Koichiro, Bernie and I went to my good friend Shoichi Ueyama’s bar – ZERO Bar!  Shoichi flew in from Japan to meet us and take us out to his bar, which is a very nice Japanese Soft Darts Bar.  There we indulged ourselves with a few bottles of Sake!  We couldn’t be rude, here was my good friend flying all the way to Shanghai and it just wouldn’t be right if we didn’t enjoy his establishment.  We also met a lot more of our friends from Japan, Hong Kong and Taipei.  We had a wonderful time, with John pairing up with another Japanese player and me the same.  We played doubles against each other using house darts, quite fun actually and the good times kept on coming.  We finally decided to shut it down and take tomorrow serious, since it was the very first day of round robins.  Thank you Shoichi for showing us a great time at the ZERO Bar!

Now reports of each day will get a wee bit shorter, since we were playing for most of the day.  Plus by now I’m sure everyone gets the picture that Shanghai is one great place to visit!

Thursday, October 15th – Day 6.  1st Round of round robins

Before we started the day off, we had a special meeting with all the Top 8 Men and Women players.  We all did a media and magazine interview, along with meeting the top government officials from Beijing, to include the Vice Chairperson of the China Olympic Committee!  During our talk, we were honored with a special gift, the mascot for the 2010 World Expo which will be held in Shanghai.  How cool is that!  The meeting lasted for about 1 hour and off we had to go, the tournament wasn’t going to wait for any of us.

Talk about starting promptly!  When they said the tournament will start at 11am, it meant 11am!  Officials were calling matches and a few people got second and third calls, almost forfeiting their first match.  Rules are rules and we love it when they are enforced.  It keeps the venue moving smoothly and doesn’t allow for people to lag around and draw things out.  Plus did I mention, the organizers arranged for all the players to have free beer and water during all three days of play!!!!

The round robins concluded with all of us maintaining one of the top 16 spots.  Here are the scores for the first day, I believe these were correct so don’t shoot me.  Oh yeah, forgot to let you know.  Each bracket had one seeded player for a total of 16 boards, with 8 players on each.

John Part 27 wins, Chris White 31 wins, Gary Mawson 30 wins, I had 28 wins, Warren Parry had 27 wins along with John Part and Dave Fatum had 25 wins.  After the first day’s round robin, everyone was starting to get settled in and adjusted to the time change.  It was a pretty mild night as well; I can’t quite recall if we may or may not have gone back out for wee pint or two, I know it was before midnight when we all came back LOL!

Friday, October 16th – Day 7.   2nd Round of round robins

The officials wanted to make sure everyone got enough sleep before the knock out round on Saturday, and the event started at 10am!  That was a bit aggressive LOL, but it started on time again at 10am, 9 darts to throw to warm up and off we went.  Ok, yes we all were up earlier and practicing in our hotel room at round 7am.  So we had plenty of prep time to get the arm fired up again.

The round robins went even better today for everyone and we all finished well in the rankings.  John Part had 33 wins, Gary Mawson 30, Chris White 29, Warren Parry and I finished with 30 wins and Dave Fatum I believe had 29 wins today.  So all in all, the rest and preparation showed with the day’s performance.

There were no shenanigans to be had tonight!  It was a going to be a big day tomorrow being the Knock Out round.  Ok, we went out under Erryn’s supervision, for a nice little relaxing time at Oscar’s bar.  A couple pints after a great dinner and off to bed we all went.  Yes it was early if you can believe it, 11pm curfew LOL!

Saturday, October 17 – Day 8.  Final Day - Knock Out Round!

Here it was, the Big Day!  This was what we were all here for.  The Men were playing for a $15,000 1st Place Prize and the Women $5,000 for 1st …Game on!

So everyone knows how the final draw was made for the knock out round, the Top 1 seed played the 64th , 2nd played the 63rd and so on and so on.  The Philippine players were the top 3 seeds, then Chris White 4th, Gary Mawson 5th, I apologize but I can’t remember 6 or 7, John Part was 8th, I was 10th, Warren Parry 11th and Dave Fatum 20th seed.

For the Women, Stacy Bromberg and Mayumi Ouchi were 1st and 2nd seeds, and that is how the finals ended up for them as well with Stacy coming out as the Champion and Mayumi Runner-Up.  CONGRATULATIONS!

Play started at 9:30am!  We all gave each other well wishes before heading into the room and now it was up to each one of us to do our best.   The format for the final day would be as follows:

1st Round of 64 – Best of 9 legs

2nd Round of 32 – Best of 11 legs

3rd Round of 16’s – Best of 13 legs

4th Quarter Final – Best of 15 legs

5th Semi Final – Best of 17 legs

6th and Finals Stage Match was best of 19 legs

To start the match you flipped a coin, winner corks (shoots the bullseye) first.  Winner of the cork started all odd numbered legs and the loser the even numbered legs.  Winner of the cork also starts the last leg, that is why it is crucial to get that all important start, if not you would have to break the throw to early to get the advantage.

My first round was to a local Shanghai Player, who I ended up beating with a score of 5-2.  My finishing was good, but I knew I had to step up my scoring as I continued on.  My second round was tougher as I played a very seasoned and former Scottish Open Champion, Rab Fotherington.  I knew Rab’s experience would make him a formidable opponent and would need to score well and get a jump start on him.

Rab played well, coming out with great scoring with us alternating wins for the first 4 legs.  With the score at 3-2, I needed to kick it into 2nd gear and press on.  I was able to break Rab’s throw and held it from that point on, finishing the match with a final score of 6-2.

My next round wouldn’t be any easier, as all the top 16 players in this round were capable of beating each other.  I was up next in the round of 16’s against Robert Culapit.  Now scoring and finishing were going to have to be a critical factor and the match from this point on even more so.

Robert and I wished each other well and the match was on.  It was the best of 13 now, a race to be the first one with 7 wins.  I had my chance early to break Robert’s throw and this would prove to be critical opening game as you will see.  I won the start and the scoring started off well for both of us.  I was sitting on 108 after 12 darts and Robert was on 65 after 12 darts.

I was up for the throw, my first dart landed in the triple 20, second dart was a nice setup inside the double, hitting a single 16, but my checkout dart ended up on the outside of the double 16.  That was going to be a crucial miss on my part.  Robert checked out the 65 for a nice first round 15 darter and I let the chance of striking first slip by.  But I had a lot more games to go, so not to worry just yet.

The second game Robert held his throw, with the score now 2-0 I needed to win.  The 3rd leg started and I finished on a nice little 16 darter, only after Robert missed hitting a double bull finish for a 15 darter of his own.  Now 2-1 in, here’s where the chance to break your opponents throw comes in to play.  I had a chance to tie up the score 2-2, but two missed double 20’s would prove painful for me.  Robert won the leg and that miss by me gave him a little extra push as he dug deep.  Robert pulled together two nice legs back to back with a 13 darter to break my throw and then followed up with another 15 darter after that.

Now 4-1, I had to somehow reach down and stop Robert’s progress and get some more legs.  I needed to hold my throw and not make this become a total routing!  I thought things were going to change for me; a nice start with 140, 140, and 93 to leave 128 after 9 darts helped my confidence.  I checked out the game for a nice 12 dart game finally!  I thought things were surely going to turn around for me now at 4-2, but to Robert’s credit he held firm and a pressed on better than me.  Robert finished the next three games on a couple timely missed doubles on my part to beat me 7-2.  Congrats to Robert Culapit for a great performance.  That would be the end of my hopes of winning the SIDO with a Top 16 finish for me.  Well, off to cheer on my buddies!

Just as my game was ending, I caught the match a few boards down from me where two more good buddies of mine were playing each other.  Warren Parry and Gary Mawson squared off and it was Warren who ended up winning the match 7-1.  Big hats off to Warren, as both he and Gary are talented players, to win 7-1, some great dart must have been thrown!  So Gary finished in the last round of 16’s, with Warren pushing forward.

I ended up catching the very end of Dave Fatum and Chris White’s Top 16 match against each other.  It’s always unfortunate for friends to meet that early, 8’s or Semi Finals would be better but that’s the way it goes.  Chris won the last leg to edge out Dave with a 7-6 win and that would move him into the Quarter Finals, to take a spot alongside Warren Parry.

The Quarter Finals (Top 8), saw John Part against Celso, Chris White against Royden Lam (HK), Warren Parry against Christian Perez, and Lourence Ilagan against Robert Culapit.  Four separate countries were now being represented in the round, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and a strong contingent from the Philippines.

This round would see players playing best of 15, a race to 8 wins.  John Part was able to hold off Celso for a nice 8-4 win.  Lourence Ilagan was able to fend of fellow Philippines player Robert Culapit 8-0.  Here’s where I was hoping my two great friends and fellow PUMA players Chris and Warren would come through and triumph in their matches.

Warren was up 5-2 against Christian Perez and Chris was up 6-1 against Royden Lam, then the break in the match came.  After 7 legs were played, the players were given a 5 minute bathroom break.  The break seemed to be an unlucky one for Chris and Warren.

After the break, Royden won another leg as did Chris.  Now the score was 7-2 and I was glad to see Chris appeared as if he would win at least 8-3 or 8-4 at worst and march on into the Semi Finals against John Part.  But the tide had changed and 7 wins was where Chris would be left at.  Royden pulled together 3, 13 dart games in a row WOW!  Now 7-5, I was still sure Chris could pull it through, but the momentum you could feel and hear was changing quickly.  There was a huge crowd now watching as Royden and Chris played.  It was a home town crowd as it seemed only Dave, Erryn and I were cheering for Chris.  Every big score and out shot Royden hit, the crowd was in a frenzy.  Chris still looked good on the line, holding his composure but the darts weren’t falling into the triple.  He wired enough of them; it was crazy not to see any of his darts catch a triple.  As it was, Royden rallied back to win the match 8-7 and Chris would see his bid to be the SIDO Champion end there.

The same turn of fortune Chris had earlier; found its way to creep up on Warren as well.  Warren was up 5-2 against Christian at the break and looking really confident and on form!  With Chris out and Warren now the sole PUMA player left, it was up to him now.  Warren played great all week and each day he seemed to get stronger and stronger.  With a great win against Gary earlier, I was sure Warren would be able to pull through.  The break came and Christian found a new purpose and started to pull legs away from Warren.  5-3, 5-4, 5-5, oh no now it was 6-5 Christian’s favor and that would be how the match would end up, with Christian winning the next 6 legs against Warren for a final score of 8-5.

Now the Semi Finals were set – John Part vs. Royden Lam and Christian Perez vs. Lourence Ilagan.  The format was best of 19, with John Part and Christian Perez winning their matches and claiming their place in the finals.  The stage was set, John and Christian would fighting for the $15,000 1st prize and the being named as the first SIDO Champion 2009.  The finals would be televised and broadcasted all through out China.  It was a grand setup, with a magnificent stage setup and banquet area for spectators to watch the finals.

Before I get in to how the finals went.  You have to appreciate the entire venue setup.  When we got there on first Saturday, they were just starting to build the stage and get the venue setup.  By the first day of play and the finals, everything couldn’t have been more beautiful.

The banquet had an enormous buffet setup, adorned with gorgeous decorations and a huge 4’ tall horse statue carved entirely out of butter!  I couldn’t tell you how many delicious foods they had prepared, but I would conservatively say at least 25-30 different tastes of Eastern and Western foods, yummy I’m getting hungry all over again just writing about it! The players and special invited guests all had premium viewing seats of the stage.  Even if you were seated near the back of the banquet hall, you could easily see the match via one of the two huge 12’ movie screens on each side of the stage.

The banquet kicked off with the opening ceremony of dancers for entertainment.  Then the introduction of the finalist, John Part and Christian Perez were made.  I think I had the best seat in the house and a little nerve racking as well.  I was asked to be the Commentator for the final match.  I’ve scored thousands of matches in my time and consider myself a pretty good score keeper, but I had never been on stage in a suit with TV cameras!  Not only do you have to call the score, but you need to call out with a microphone so the crowd can hear.  Then I had to make sure I didn’t call out the wrong score, ensure the score keepers on stage wrote and subtracted the scores correctly, calling out game shots, all this without interrupting the players coming back up to the line!!!  Yes all the lights were very hot, try wearing a wool suit and have nerves going through you as well.  But there was no turning back, duty called!  See I knew I’d make it to the finals, LOL!

The finals kicked off and John’s experience as a player came shining through.  John took out numerous shots on the Double Bull and his finishing was fantastic!  At the break after the 7th leg, John still had his sense of humor.  Asking me, “10 minute break Rob, so what do you want me to do? You’re the referee and all”, as he gave me a little chuckle.  Ha ha John!

After the break, the play resumed with John being up 5-2.  John didn’t look back and put it into high gear, winning the match 10-4.  Christian played extremely well, but it was John Part who would be holding up the 1st place trophy and $15,000!

The closing ceremonies concluded with handing out trophy’s to all the Top 8 finishers and above.  They even had the Chinese Gold Medalist Olympic Women’s Diver there handing out awards, wow how great is that!  Well that ends the tournament and the short story, ok maybe not so short but there’s no way I was writing all of this on a two page blog!

Oh……wait a minute; it just can’t end like this can it?!  Ok, it doesn’t.  After the closing ceremonies, all of us, the whole tournament crew and all of our new friends went out for one last hurrah at the “Green Dragon”!  Great Times, celebrating one of the BEST if not THE BEST tournaments I have ever had the chance to be a part of!  This was truly a World Class Event.  See everyone again next year!  This time, plan ahead and I would like more and more friends and players to come, this way I don’t have to write so much and you can experience it firsthand yourself…LOL!

Medalist World Championships - Las Vegas

The Medalist World Championships was moved to the Texas Station Hotel & Casino this year.  The venue was set up well, with a nice selection of BULL's and PUMA Dart products.  I was told they sold out of my darts before the end of the second days, THANKS to everyone for the support!!!!!

I also had the pleasure of meeting quite a few new friends and seeing old friends from Spain and Thailand.
From BULL's Darts, I had the pleasure of meeting the Managing Director, Hermann Steins and shared a few beers with him as well - thanks mate for the refreshments!

Of course it was always nice to see my friends from Thailand!  Thanks "Pop" and to all the Thai team members for my official Thai Airways Team Shirt!  In the picture below is Nam, Me, Kok,
Naoki Matsumoto (Japan), Miho Iwanaga (Japan) and Somchai.  Nam, Kok and Somchai were members of the Thai player entourage that came over.

I also had the great pleasure of meeting Naoki and Miho.  If many of you didn't know, Miho is a regular on DartsLive Matches in Japan, the Japan Tournament Circuit and is Japans "Top" female player.  But don't let her being a lady fool you... I watched and played many warm up games against her and she was AWESOME! or "Suge" in Japanese.  During warm up & match play, myself and many other spectators got to watch Miho shoot 16 & 17 ratings consistently!  For those of you who are not familiar with the MEDALIST Rating system, a "17" rated player is the highest rating.  So nonetheless Miho shot some awesome darts all weekend.  You can check out more info on Rock Star Direct [RSD], who Miho is a player for and Naoki is the Director.  Just click on the picture of her and I to go to RSD website.  You can click on the picture on the left to visit Thai Soft Darts website as well.

Ok, so now for some of the results over the weekend.  I'll just have to get it out now and say, it was less than good for me.  There were some extremely well put together teams this year.  My partner Randon Roberson and I had some unfortunate luck when we played.  But I couldn't have been happier with Randon's performance as he held up to a talented field.

My friends from Thailand won the Super A Doubles event on Saturday Morning, with MEDALIST Asia's top Thai Player Natthakhom winning the 4 person Pro-Am event.  PS... I have to thank my Pro-Am team - Bud, Laurie and Colleen for playing extremely well.  I had a great time with the 3 of you - tons of fun all night!!!

Fellow player Dave Fatum won the last days Super A Doubles event, with another great buddy "JOHN HUSMAN" pulling out this years OPEN SINGLES TITLE!!!! CONGRATS JOHN!  John beat Raul Rodriguez from Spain in the finals.  On the way John took out Paul Lim and David Fatum, to capture his well deserved victory, GREAT JOB!  Paul Lim and Scotty Burnett ended up in the semi-finals, with fellow PUMA player Eddie Lawrence playing extremely well against me in the first round, knocking me out....ouch!  Oh well, there's always next year and maybe MEDALIST Asia in Bangkok Thailand November 6-8.....hmmm we'll just have to see.

PDC Las Vegas Desert Classic & Players Championship

The PDC event ends one busy month of darts!  It has been a long time since this many major tournaments ended up on back to back to back to back weekends!  I came into Vegas really confident, especially with all the tournament practice I've had leading up to Vegas with good results.  My head was focused, confident and my game was tuned in as well.  So here goes.....

The first qualifier was held on Sunday June 28.  I was cruising along on my board winning the first two matches 5-0, 5-0!  Now came for the all important board final.  Win the board and go on to play for the TV Stage with two more wins!  Andy Jenkins was my seed and who I had to beat to win the board.  It started out great on the scoring, but 3 shots at the Double Top to break Andy against the throw would prove costly!  Andy took advantage of my miss and took a quick 3-0 lead.  I held the darts the next game to make it 3-1, then on two more occassions I had 2 darts at a double and missed, arghhh!  Let's just say I wasn't a very happy with myself at that point.  As you all know, when you play a Player of Andy's caliber, or for that matter any Top Ranked PDC player, you can't afford to miss doubles and throw games away.  Lesson learned as Andy went on to win 5-1.

The second day I came out once again guns a blazing, oops until three darts at a double 15 to win the match.  My first round I played UK player Aaron Turner.  I went up 3-0 right away and was looking to cruise through the match.  Aaron made it 3-1, then I had darts at a double to make it 4-1 but missed narrowly but nonetheless still missed.  Aaron tied it up 4-4 and it went to the last leg.  I lost the Bull which already put me three darts behind, but I came on strong with Aaron missing his double shot and returning the favor to me.  I was sitting on 100 after 12 darts, first dart single 20, second dart DOUBLE 20 YES, third dart for the win....hits my flight and hits Double 5 on the wire NO!  Aaron comes up and he misses his game winning shot and I somehow mustard the ability to miss 3 darts at Double 15 to win the match, now I'm definitely not happy with myself!!!!  Aaron hits the double on his third dart to win and that ends my qualifying hopes.  Well back to the board to practice those finishes.  Unfortunately before those few in opportune misses, my finishing was what kept me going so long so just need to clean up the doubles.

On Tuesday it was the PDPA Players Championship.  I once again won my first two matches 6-5, 6-2 and then had to play Dennis Ovens for my board final in the last 64 round.  I wasn't over confident, but I had played well all weekend and didn't think anything different when it came to this match.  I knew I had to play well, especially against Dennis who has been one of the Top Players for 30 years, so he has definitely earned his respect from players and still does.  But none of that mattered to me, what mattered was the win and moving on into the Top 32.  We toed up to the Oche and off we went.  I don't know what happened, whether it was the fatigue of playing all weekend, the desert heat or just nerves, but I went absolutely FLAT!  I couldn't seem to find a triple 20 to save my arse!  60, 60, 60, 59, 60's.....dam it was frustrating.  None the less it doesn't take a genius to figure out what happened - I got a 6-1 dart lesson and not happy with my last match performance.  Not saying I would have beaten Dennis, but would have at least liked to give him a better match.  Next time!

All in all, not a big money winning weekend in Vegas, ooops actually I did make some money LOL!  My buddies Gary Mawson, Paul Lim and John Part got me hooked on Pai Gao Poker!  Hello baby, this is my new favorite game!  The Pai Gao tables kept my head above waters in Vegas and $$$in my pocket yeah!  Thanks boys!

O.K., back to the serious side.  It wasn't the results I wanted in Vegas, mainly getting on the PDC Tv Stage, but I played well and showed I could play with the best of them when I'm on form.  So I will put the experience in the memory bank, which you can never replace or replicate during any practice session.  Back to the practice board and getting ready for the next PDC events in August and my return to Las Vegas for the MEDALIST World Championships!

PACMANIA 2 - Burbank California

Sorry for the late post, but I've been one busy darter this past month!  Boston, La Rochelle France, PACMANIA 2 and ending the month with the Las Vegas Desert Classic....anyone know what day it is LOL!

PACMANIA 2 was yet another unbelievable event, sponsored by an extremely generous Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.  It has been about 25 years since we had a tournament of this magnitude in the U.S. with a prize fund of $100,000!  If my memory serves me right, it was the "Royal Hawaiin" tournament approximately 25 years ago that was also $100,000.  Heck the "Lucky Strike" days only got up to 50,000 as well as the "North American Open".  Nothing in the U.S. has been this great outside of a PDC event.  And it doesn't look like things are going to slow down either.  My inside source, i.e. Rhen and Michelle Fuentes are already talking about making another PACMANIA 3 in 4-6 months!!!!

O.K., now for the happenings of the PACMANIA 2 weekend.  Thursday was the big day for Blind Draws, with three that day.  The first event was the 501 LOD, where I drew Dan Santos.  Dan and I played great together all day and eventually winning the very first event!

My good friend Ray "The Razor" Carver  showed up and we played doubles and triples together.  On the first doubles which was the Quarters, where a few missed doubles in the last leg from both of us eventually cost us.  No worries, next up as the Cricket Doubles.  We played some unbelievable matches during the day, the most memorable was the Nico Depaynos and Sammy Cruz match!  The first game went to over 1,000 points!  It wasn't because we weren't trying to close numbers, everyone was pounding the triples with ease.  It came down to the Bull for Ray and I in that game.

Ray told me I needed 5 BULLS to win, I said O.K. no worries (LOL just kidding).  My first dart landed in the Double Bull, my next dart clicks off of the first and hits a single Bull.  Ray yells, "Robbie" in mid stroke!  I stopped looked back and he said sorry buddy you only need 4 BULLS!  Now the pressure was on.  The way my first two darts sat in the board, there was no way I was getting another double Bull in there.  I laughed for a second, took a deep breath, walked to the line and powered another Bull in to win the game.  Wow and what a game it was for both teams!  Ray and I ended up in the Semi-Final match against buddies Scotty Burnett and Frank Hernandez.  It went all three legs, but in the end Scotty and Frank nipped us and went on to the finals.

The next day I played another buddy John Denich in the Singles 501.  Five cracking legs we played and it came down to the bull which John won.  He stayed very consistent and performed superbly and won the match, unfortunately for me that was to get into the big money round.  But hats off to John for playing a brilliant match.

Next up for Saturday was the Triples event.  Ray and I teamed up with my mixed doubles partner Andrea Taylor.  We all clicked on the team and off to the races we went.  Andrea proved to be a key member of the team, bailing us out a couple times with back to back 140's!  We made it to the stage and won the finals against another great team of Larry Butler, Timmy Nicols and Jan Turner.

For the Open Doubles Cricket, Ray and I met Johnny K and Scott Kirchner in the 16's.  We went the distance but unfortunately lost the last leg.  We had a great weekend overall.  It's always nice to have my buddies from the East coast come out, especially "The Razor".  Oh yeah, almost forgot we had one more event to go Sunday night!

The last event was a 4-Person draw and for big $$$$.  $5,000 for first and $3,000 for second!  I was fortunate again to draw a great team - Scott Kirchner, Art Rocelis, Charles Bradish and I teamed up for the event and what a ride it was.  You never played a "Team" event unless it came down to the last game.  It was a race to 4 games.  The first four games were singles 301, then doubles 501, doubles cricket and then the team game if needed.  This was the most fun I've had playing a draw EVER!!  The format was great, basically singles if you win all four straight.  We ended up in the finals again, this time against some more friends, Eddie Lawrence, Howard Myers, Dan Daugherty and Ronnie Peppers.  The format leaned in their favor as they won 4-1.  But either way you look at it, we didn't lose as $3,000 went into the teams pocket!

That wraps up the weekend, oh yes and there were two great After Parties put on by the Tournament organizers!  Wow, Wow, Wow!  Free food, great music, dancers the hold nine yards!  And I must give a special thanks to "Nocout" Tequila for giving me a few bottles to share with everyone and "Sportivo" energy drinks for keeping me awake!

Thank you Manny Pacquiao, Manny Pacquiao Dart Foundation, Rhen & Michelle Fuentes, all the Staff and sponsors for hosting another GREAT EVENT!

Le Prestige Cup 2009 was great for Team USA in France!
(Chris White, John Husman, Scotty Burnett, Rob Heckman)

Well we are back from La Rochelle France and what a week it was!  First off, I must give an enormous thanks to MEDALIST and Lee Peppard for sending us over to represent USA.  I would also like to give a big thanks to Ike (owner of Cloud 9 Bar in Washington), our new friends Gurdev and Tom for coming all the way to France just to watch us - WOW now that's support and of course France Darts for having us!

The trip started out with us missing our 1:10pm train from Paris to La Rochelle by a single minute LOL!  We all had a chuckle (not really), but put down a couple pints and took the next train an hour later.  We finally got to La Rochelle later in the evening and got prepared for the next days event - the International Doubles event.  Chris and John partnered up and Scotty and I the other team.

The day started out great with Chris and John ending up and the opposite side of the knockout bracket than us!  The stage was set for an all USA Final if we kept playing the great darts we had in the round robin stages.  Chris and John narrowly missed making the final stage, when they lost to Paul Lim and James his partner from Singapore.  Scotty and I made the finals, making it an all MEDALIST finals event....not bad for the awesome level of competition there!

It was a TRUE barn burner of a finals, with it going down to the 7th leg!  I had just missed a 123 checkout and left Scotty with a double 2 for the win.  James was up next and missed a 131 checkout and left Paul with a 58 out.  Unfortunately it wasn't in the cards for Scotty and I, as all three of his darts gave the double 2 the closest shave ever but just didn't happen to fall our way.  Paul hit the 58 with two darts, 18 double 20 for the match.  A great start for all of us, with two more events to play.

Sunday was the International 4-Person Team event.  We cruised very easily through the round robin and into the knockout bracket.  We played brilliantly, narrowly escaping a defeat at the hand of the Belgium's again in the semi-final!  All the teams we played, played extremely well but we were determined to win this event.

We met a on form and focused French Team in the finals.  Obviously the crowd was for everyone playing good darts, but there was no doubt they wanted their team to win in the Finals.  This happened to be the first ever French team to make the finals at any of the Le Prestige tournaments!

The French team came out firing on all 8 cylinders and hit the ground running!  It was France 1-0, then 2-0, then 3-0!!!!  France was on there way to white washing us in front of a massive crowd and the anticipation mounted as the crowd starting firing up!  In the fourth leg we fought back and we won the Cricket game.  Now John and I were up again in the 501 leg.  France missed a critical out and I was sitting on double 9 to pull us back into the fight.  I was up and YES!!! One dart right into the double 9 and it was now 3-2!  Scotty told Chris if I hit the double, all they had to do is break the French team in the Cricket game and we were all square 3-3!  The second gear kicked in for us as Chris and Scotty did exactly what they had to and broke the French team playing against the darts!  Talk about anticipation now, the crowd was in a frenzy and the last game started with the team 501 event.

Now here's the heart breaker, but not for us!  The France team had a 130 checkout to win, the player went up BULL, BULL - Single 15!  But all the stage lights came on, music started and the crowd roared, but it didn't go into the double for the win!  YES, they reset the music and lights, Scotty was up next and caught the double 8 for the WIN!  Yes we did it!  We came back from a 3-0 deficit in Soft Darts, which is a feat to do!

We were on Cloud 9 (that was for you IKE) after our first two days performance and looking forward to the last event the - Prestige Cup.  We still had our same Team and looked to lock up the weekend again, and why wouldn't we think that?  Oh yes, we met Team Spain again in the finals....urghhh!  I don't know what it is, but they got us again in a disappointing 4-1 loss!  Hats off to Spain.  I think we just wanted John to have a loss against them as well LOL!  Just kidding of course.

Still a great weekend for all of us.  We met great people and had a wonderful fan base cheering us on everyday, to include tons of locals!  Thank you so much again Lee, MEDALIST, France Darts and all of our fans....you all truly made this a special event.

PACQUIAO SPONSORS L.A. DARTS TOURNAMENT

Devo, Joe, Manny and I after our Draw Doubles Match

O.K. so here it goes!  The tournament went off without a hitch, with only 3 weeks planning and preparation!  I have to give kudos to Rhen Fuentes and Michelle Tarue for organizing this event & off course Manny Pacquiao for funding the event

There were top players coming from all over the U.S. to participate in this event, from the East Coast to the West Coast alike.  Three Men's Singles - each at $2000 for first, where else in the U.S. (minus PDC events) do you have these kind of payouts and three singles events - no where!  Added to the $1200 payout for 1st place in the triples, $2000 payout for 1st in the Doubles and another $1000 for 1st in the Blind Draw!  It doesn't get any better than this, oh yes it does when Manny's June tournament comes around with the prize money at $100,000!!!!!!

It was good to see so much support from all players at every level with such short notice.  Tournaments across the board are becoming bigger and better and continued support like we had last weekend, reaffirms that the "Dart" surge is coming on again in the U.S.

My buddy Chris White and I were fortunate to have been invited to Manny's condo on Friday night for a little meet and greet and to throw a few darts.  After a couple of hours at Manny's place, it was time to go (9pm is Manny's curfew he sets while training).  But before we left for the night, we presented Manny with his own PUMA Dart shirts and most importantly a set of his own Custom Manny "PACMAN" Pacquiao PUMA Darts.  This was the least we could do for him for being so gracious and inviting us to his house and sponsoring the tournament.  I have to say, Manny is truly a down to earth person!  Thank you Manny for being so nice to us and having us over - you are truly a Class Act!

Well let's get down to the nitty gritty.  Who won the three separate singles you ask?  Lets see, I made it to the finals of the first days event, playing a great Philipinnes player named Nico Depenos.  We were both on top form for the finals & did not disappoint the crowd watching.  The first leg went to Nico, just as I missed the 141 checkout for 15 darts (wired the double 12 last dart).  I won the next leg which was Cricket.  I started the 301 leg with a 71 on, but Nico countered with a brilliant 160 on!  Then he went 81 and checked out a 60 for a nice 9 dart game (I was sitting on 130).  Then came a second game of Cricket and a nice back to back 9 marks (19,18,18 & 17,16,15)  secured the win for Nico.  Congrats to Nico on a class win!

Darin Young won the next days Men's Cricket Singles against Scotty Burnett.  Gordon Dixon had a great day for the Sunday Men's Singles 501, beating Joe Slyvan in the end.  Darin Young & Nick Mandrilla won the Draw Doubles, Nico Depenos & Sammy Cruz won the 501 Doubles and Julie Heckman took second in the Mixed Triples with Scotty Burnett and Frank Hernandez.

What an awesome weekend for everyone!  I just want to say thank you again to Manny Pacquiao for financing this event, Rhen & Michelle and all the other people helping make this tournament happen.  Look out for June's event, it's sure to be just as grand!  Check out some of the pictures below from the tournament, with more to come.  Thanks to Norman Arriola for the pictures!

Team Thailand & Hong Kong Update!

Ok here it is, the long awaited happenings for Hong Kong and Team Thailand review!  After many many hours of calls, emails back and forth between Asia Darts Assoc. in Hong Kong, Thai Darts Assoc. & liaisoning with my friend Johnny in Bangkok TEAM THAILAND became a reality!!  I must give a special thanks to the TDA & Mr. Vichai for sending over Giffy, Nattakhom and Thanawat (Yong) to help me represent Thailand in the FIRST EVER showing of a Thai Team in the Asia Bullshooter!  I must also thank Joseph Kwong & Chris Ngan of Asia Darts Assoc. for allowing this the Thai team to be formed and for helping to promote Thai Players in the International Darting World!

I had heard from Johnny in Bangkok that Yong and Giffy were excellent steel tip players and should have no problem with the transition to the electronic game.  I had already had first hand knowledge of Nattakhom's abilities, since I had already met and played with him in Las Vegas last year at the Medalist World Championships.

I must say this before I continue on....all the members of the Thai Team not only impressed me with their darting abilities, but also how they adapted to playing electronic darts!  I have to take my hat off to Yong, Giffy and Nattakhom for handling the pressure of being the first Thai Team to enter in an International Bullshooter event.  Kudos to you all, you represented yourself well and more importantly you represented THAILAND with your abilities and class act!

There were a total of 14 talented International Teams!  The day started out with a Round Robin format where the game was Double in/Double Out 501.  Only the top two teams in each group made it into the Top 8 Knockout Bracket.  We came out of our bracket in the #2 spot and played Team Philippines first.  It was a very hard fought match, but in the end Tam Philippines won the last game and would eventually go on and win the International Team Event against Team Canada.

Even though we didn't win, making the Final Top 8 was a feat in itself.  The level of competition in this event was extremely tough to say the least.  So Team Thailand can wave the Thai Flag with pride, as we represented Thailand extremely well.  I know we took a lot of teams by surprise as they were not expecting such a talented team.  For the first year, this was a great showing and I wouldn't put it past Team Thailand making it to the finals next year!  Thank you Giffy, Yong and Nattakhom for coming to Hong Kong and playing your hearts out....you all deserve a round of applause!

ASIA BULLSHOOTER
INTERNATIONAL SUPER ONE

Just like the International Team event, each country was allowed to be represented by one person in the singles event.  I was honored by being allowed to represent Thailand in its inaugural showing at this tournament.  The pressure was on, not only because it was singles, but more importantly the weight of a country was on my shoulders and I did not want to disappoint.

The event ran like the team event, with a Round Robin format.  Once again only the top 2 players would advance to the Final 8 Knockout round.  I had a tough bracket to deal with just to get out, with one of the persons being Lawrence Ilagan from the Philippines, who was the eventual winner.  Lawrence and I made it out of the bracket 1/2 respectfully.  Then came the Final 8 Knockout, where I was to play my long time friend from the USA Ray "Razor" Carver.  Ray and I played a great match, but unfortunately a perfect game by Ray in the last leg secured him into the Semi-Finals.

My day was over, but I will remember this event forever.  Being able to play for the country of my birth and knowing my family members in Thailand were routing me on, was truly priceless.  I was proud to carry the Thai Flag on this day and I am already looking forward to next year!

I can't forget the triples event either.  Thanks to Rick Espinoza from USA for playing with me, as well as Nishikawa from Japan, who Junkei Lin of Triple8 Darts set us up with.  We made the last 16 round and had a great time playing in the process.

Thursday Night PUMA Promo
Kowloon Regal City Hotel 2-6-09

After a very long flight (17 hours total), Chris White and I arrived in Hong Kong with a few hours to spare before our exhibition for PUMA Darts on the Thursday evening.  The exhibition was at the China Coast Pub in the Kowloon Regal City Hotel.  We arrived early to get in a few practice darts before the exhibition started.  The Pub was very nice and had an excellent setup for darts., 3 electronic boards and 5 steel.  Fellow Puma player, Scott MacKenzie, organized this for us so a big thanks to him. The turnout was excellent as Chris and I took on all participants.  Scott offered a free set of our darts to anyone who beat Chris or I but it was not to be on this night, as Chris and I went undefeated against a lot of top players.  We did end up raffling off three sets of darts each at the end of the night, which was a hit.  Phil Hanna from Shanghai Darts was there too and we provided him with letters/pictures from us to the China Youth Dart Training Center.  To sum it up, it was a great night and a lot of fun with some excellent darts.  Thanks to everyone who showed up that night, you really made it a memorable event!
